What is in a word? A phrase? We take advantage of our language skills every day to communicate everything from our basic needs to our emotions. Imagine being in a situation where every word is foreign.

Learning French

Reilly was very excited to read the teacher his book.

Perhaps you’ve learned a language before and remember that moment when you heard words you didn’t understand. Not just one or two words, but all of them. The lower school has been working on building a vocabulary in French since the beginning of the school year. Together, we are filling in the holes in students’ vocabulary so that, instead of my sounding like Charlie Brown’s unintelligible teacher, they can understand and respond to what is being said or asked. Students are now working on writing short books practicing the placement of adjectives with nouns and expanding their verbs, but it is way more fun than it sounds. They are being given opportunities to find their voice in another language, to feel empowered to use their words. Students have been animated in their learning process and very excited to work on this project.
