Eatontown Private School – Machine Sewing

In this course students will build their knowledge of machine sewing by exploring its anatomy, learning how to operate the machine safely, and how to create basic stitches.  They will then put these skills to practice as they complete small projects of choice.

Purpose

This class is intended to be an introduction to sewing on a machine, where students will learn about the machine- it’s anatomy and set-up and troubleshooting problems. They will learn the use of the machine by completing simple sewing projects.

Students will…

  • explore the anatomy of a sewing machine.
  • learn to operate the machine: How to make a bobbin, how to thread the machine.
  • learn basic sewing machine skills: straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and reverse stitch; positioning and guiding fabric; sewing a seam and reinforcing a stitch; turning a corner; stuffing; and topstitching.
  • choose and complete small individual sewing projects using the sewing machine.

Students began the machine sewing class by working together to set up a machine.  They then tested the machine by each sewing a straight stitch.  In the second class students elected to create pillows.  Each student selected fabric, created a pattern, and transferred it to the fabric.  Several students began hand sewing.  Meanwhile, each student was called to a machine to practice threading it and to begin to learn how to troubleshoot and fix the machine when problems arose.   

As we approached Spring Break many students began finishing up their first pillow projects and started looking toward their next project.  In thinking about their next project, several students voiced an interest in making a second pillow.  The students were reminded that while they could repeat their first project, they had to define how the second project extended their skill base or enhanced the skills introduced in the first project.

As many students wished to continue pillow making after spring break, we decided to extend skills by introducing quilting.  Each student chose fabric for an 18×18, 12×12 and an 8×8 square.  Some students also chose to make a pattern from a printed image for their center square as well.  Students cut, pinned and sewed the first 2 squares, but time did not allow for them to complete their pillows.  The teachers offered to help students finish their projects during Explore and Wonder.

Outcome

The machine sewing class was a great success.  Students were engaged throughout the course and really enjoyed working on their individual projects.  Each student completed at least one sewing project, and while time did not allow us to finish the second project, teachers offered their help to student who wished to finish the project during Explore and Wonder.  Finally, although we had hoped to invite master seamstresses to work with students in a few of the classes, we were unable to procure them.  However, Marie Badarani, an experienced seamstress, was kind enough to help throughout the course.  She was an invaluable resource.
