Eatontown Private School – Electronics Elective

Students enrolled in the Electronics class will spend the session designing and building either individual electronic projects or working on larger projects. They will learn soldering, basic electronics, and the use of Arduino based microcontrollers.

This elective is designed to allow students of varying abilities to learn the basics of electronics by building and testing devices. The students will learn how electricity works, common electrical components as well as skills such as diagnosing and repairing electrical devices.

The students will…

  • learn to use tools such as a soldering iron and a multimeter.

Process

On the first day, it was clear that many of the students who chose the class were expecting a continuation of the technology elective offered the previous session. With this in mind, several of the students worked on technology-based projects such as movie making and programming.

For the students interested in electronics, the class started with an overview of how electricity worked. Using Snap Circuits and wire, students experimented with methods of lighting small light bulbs and LEDs with a battery.

During the course of the class, the 3D printer was repaired and several test prints were made. After an accident, the printer was broken, affording an opportunity for several of the students to diagnose the problem and attempt repairs. Another popular pastime was capturing high voltage power from an old television to perform various experiments found online.

During the last days of the classes, several students used their soldering skills to remove components from consumer electronics to use for experiments. Items such as motors and switches were removed, tested and sorted for future use by other classes.

Outcome

Overall, the differing ideas on the class scope gave each student a chance to really follow their passions. Although some students were more interested in the programming and moviemaking than the electronics intent of the class, the majority of the class ended the session with a better understanding of the importance of electronics in everyday life.
