Traditional academics are offered in our challenging and individualized K-2 setting.
Children learn through their interests, at a deep and meaningful level. Our small class sizes allow us to guide and encourage students to learn more about what interests them.
Children’s curiosity is encouraged. Our multi-age classrooms:
- encourage students to be compassionate
- show them how to be helpful and understanding
All while knowing they can depend on their teachers to give them individual attention.
Our curriculum is designed so all subjects are integrated. Science, for example, is connected to writing, and cooking is connected to math.
We are dedicated to allowing our Voyagers to explore and expand their horizons. We provide the template and tools, and the guidance and security that inspires learning.
Children at this age are developing and expanding their reading and writing skills. Fluency and comprehension are key focus areas as children move from learning to read to reading to learn.
Children continue to use a variety of symbolic languages to communicate their ideas and feelings as they construct meaning across all subjects.
Children’s experiences in mathematics and science support their abilities as creative problem solvers and critical thinkers. Numerical operations that describe relationships such as pattern, measurement, and seriation are now being represented and taught with manipulatives and everyday examples.
Curiosity and Creativity…
…drives all learning. The goal is to create opportunities for asking good questions that lead children to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the world around them.
The teacher draws on children’s interests and prior knowledge and expects that learning will deepen and skills will grow stronger. The teacher considers herself a co-learner and collaborator with children and their families.
Children thrive in social environments that create safe and healthy relationships and provide a strong sense of community. Morning meeting, children working in small groups, and classroom and community jobs enable children to contribute to the care of each other and to the classroom.
